A Sun Ferry vessel, which departed the Central Pier No. 5 at 3.10pm on Monday, got stuck in a fishing boat’s net at around 3.35pm, passenger Nicky Blokhoff told HKFP by phone. She said passengers aboard could hear a loud noise when the ferry got caught in the net. The vessel then ground to a halt, with both the ferry and fishing boat stranded at sea for about an hour. “You could hear that the net got stuck... and then you could hear the engine kind of struggling with it,” Blokhoff said. Tugboat An empty Sun Ferry vessel acted as a tugboat and dragged the troubled ferry back to shore after it was separated from the net, Blokhoff said. She added that she believed the motor of the ferry she was on had been damaged in the incident. The Sun Ferry vessel (left) at Mui Wo Ferry Pier after being caught in a fishing net on March 16, 2026. The ferry – which was due to arrive at Mui Wo Ferry Pier at 3.45-3.50pm – reached its destination at around 4.30pm. HKFP has reached out to Sun Ferry for comment.
