19th December 2025 – (Taipei) Taiwan’s Premier, Cho Jung-tai, has confirmed that several people were injured in a violent incident at a Taipei metro station after a man set off smoke bombs and attacked bystanders with a knife.

According to local authorities, the assailant is believed to have died after leaping from the roof of the station complex. Officials said the motive for the attack remains unknown and that investigations are under way, Reuters reported.

Preliminary figures indicate that at least nine people were injured in the assault, with four of them reported to be in a critical condition. The rampage unfolded at a major interchange station in the capital, where the suspect allegedly deployed multiple smoke devices before launching a stabbing attack.

Witnesses quoted by local media said they heard several muffled explosions near one of the station exits, after which dense orange-white smoke rapidly filled the area. Amid the chaos, one man reportedly rushed forward in an attempt to subdue the attacker as he continued to throw smoke bombs.

The would-be intervenor was said to have suffered a severe stab wound to his left arm, causing heavy blood loss. He subsequently collapsed and was described by local outlet SETN as being in an extremely critical condition.

Authorities have not yet released full details of the attacker’s identity or background. Emergency services transported the injured to nearby hospitals, while police cordoned off the scene and began collecting evidence to piece together the sequence of events and determine whether the suspect acted alone.
