20th December 2025 – (Washington) The Pentagon has conducted a series of strikes on Islamic State-affiliated targets across Syria in response to a recent attack that killed two U.S. soldiers and one American civilian, U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Friday.
“Earlier today, U.S. forces commenced OPERATION HAWKEYE STRIKE in Syria to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure and weapons sites in direct response to the attack on U.S. forces that occurred on 13th December in Palmyra, Syria,” Hegseth wrote on X. “This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance. Today, we hunted and we killed our enemies. Lots of them. And we will continue.”
The strikes were expected to continue for several hours into the early hours of Saturday in Syria, the New York Times reported. CNN said the Pentagon and partner forces had mounted roughly 10 operations, resulting in the killing or detention of around 23 individuals. Syria’s state-run Al-Thawra newspaper reported on Saturday that US forces fired heavy missiles from bases in the Deir ez‑Zor countryside towards desert areas in the east and north of the country.
