20th December 2025 – (Warsaw) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that conditions at the front are complex and growing more difficult, citing his recent visit to Kupyansk in the eastern Kharkiv region, a strategic transport hub where he described the situation as tense with the front line close by.
Zelensky, speaking during an official visit to Poland, stressed that despite sustained pressure from Russian forces, Ukrainian troops continue to hold the city.
In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin, at his annual press conference the same day, asserted that Kupyansk had come under Russian control “several weeks ago” and claimed that around 3,500 Ukrainian servicemen were encircled near the area — a statement at odds with Kyiv’s account.
Zelensky also acknowledged difficulties in securing certain types of ammunition and air-defence missiles, noting that deliveries had been delayed for various reasons. He emphasised that this should not be construed as criticism of Ukraine’s partners.
