20th December 2025 – (Hong Kong) Law enforcement authorities said this morning (20 December) they are investigating potential human error after three prisoner escape incidents in the past two months, including yesterday’s breakout at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Officials cited internal guidelines and stressed that disciplinary inquiries or actions are not ruled out. They vowed that such lapses must not recur and noted that suitable technologies are being explored to support custodial operations.
The latest case involves a 35-year-old male suspect arrested over 10 alleged offences, including robbery and theft. He fled yesterday morning (19 December) while under guard for an X‑ray at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, escaping barefoot in patient attire. He reportedly ran a red light to reach his flat in Mong Kok to change clothes, then allegedly snatched a passer-by’s mobile phone before taking three successive taxi rides without paying to head towards the New Territories.
After about five hours, officers tracking the man intercepted a taxi at Pak Sha Tsuen in Yuen Long and subdued him. Following enquiries, he was arrested on suspicion of escaping from lawful custody, theft and making off without payment, and is currently being detained for investigation.
