21st December 2025 – (Kyiv) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he broadly backs a proposal for a trilateral meeting between the national security advisers of Ukraine, the United States and Russia, while cautioning that expectations for any breakthrough should remain measured. Speaking on Saturday, Zelensky confirmed that the initiative had originated in Washington and was relayed to him by Ukraine’s chief peace negotiator, Rustem Umerov, according to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
The Ukrainian leader acknowledged uncertainty over whether such talks would yield substantive new outcomes, but pointed to previous negotiations in Türkiye as evidence that dialogue can deliver tangible humanitarian gains, particularly in relation to prisoner exchanges. “I am very glad that we had exchanges. Our people, our military, primarily prisoners, returned home. And civilians. And therefore we need to take such steps,” Zelensky said, highlighting the return of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians as a key achievement of earlier diplomatic efforts.
He stressed that any process that leads to further exchanges or practical agreements would be welcomed by Kyiv. “If the results are exchanges or some other agreements, I cannot be against it, then we support the proposal of the United States of America. Let’s see how it goes,” he added, underscoring his cautious but pragmatic stance.
Despite his readiness to explore the US-backed initiative, Zelensky underlined that the most contentious items on the peace agenda remain unresolved. These include questions over territory occupied during the conflict, control of the strategically significant Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and securing sustainable international funding for Ukraine’s reconstruction.
