Magnitude 5.5 quake off Aomori rattles Tohoku and Hokkaido, no tsunami risk

21st December 2025 – (Tokyo) A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture this morning, with tremors felt across parts of Tohoku and Hokkaido. Authorities confirmed there is no risk of a tsunami associated with this event.

NHK reported the quake occurred at approximately 10.29am local time, with the epicentre located offshore to the east of Aomori. The hypocentre was at a depth of around 50 kilometres.

Strong shaking measuring upper levels on local scales was recorded in several municipalities. Intensity 4 was observed in Hachinohe City (Minato-machi, Uchimaru, and Nango), Gonohe (Furuhata and Kuraishi Nakaichi), and Hashikami (Dobutsu) in Aomori Prefecture, as well as in Karumai, Iwate Prefecture. Intensity 3 was reported in Misawa and Noheji in Aomori; Morioka and Kuji in Iwate; and Hakodate in Hokkaido. Lighter tremors were also felt across Miyagi, Akita and Yamagata prefectures.

The emergency information account UN_NERV reiterated that the epicentre was off eastern Aomori, with a magnitude of 5.5 and a maximum intensity of 4 in Aomori and Iwate, and again stressed there was no concern about a tsunami
