21st December 2025 – (Johannesburg) At least 10 people have been killed and another 10 injured in a mass shooting in a township outside Johannesburg, South African police said on Sunday, in what is the second such incident in the country this month.

The attack occurred in Bekkersdal, an impoverished community about 25 miles (40km) south-west of Johannesburg, located close to some of South Africa’s major gold mining operations. The shooting took place in the vicinity of a tavern or informal bar, according to early reports.

Police said the motive for the attack remains unknown. In a statement cited by local media, officers said that “some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen”, suggesting that at least part of the assault was indiscriminate.

“Ten people are dead. We don’t have a breakdown of who they are,” Brigadier Brenda Muridili, spokesperson for the Gauteng provincial police, told Agence France-Presse. Authorities confirmed that a further 10 people were wounded and taken for medical treatment.

South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) News reported that 10 fatalities had been recorded in Bekkersdal, but this could not immediately be independently verified by Reuters. Investigations are ongoing, and police have not yet announced any arrests.

Bekkersdal, a township west of Johannesburg, has long struggled with high levels of poverty, unemployment and violent crime, mirroring broader security challenges across parts of South Africa. The latest incident adds to mounting concern over gun violence in the country following another mass shooting earlier this month.
