21st December 2025 – (Hong Kong) The body of a Filipino domestic helper who died in last month’s deadly fire in Hong Kong has been returned to the Philippines, where a senior government official has praised her as a heroine. Philippine Secretary for Migrant Workers Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed that the remains of 39-year-old Maryan Pascual Esteban arrived in the country on Saturday night. He said officials and relatives gathered to pay their last respects as her coffin was received.
On social media, Cacdac described Esteban as a “slain overseas Filipino worker heroine”, sharing a photograph of mourners standing with heads bowed in prayer beside her casket. Esteban’s family had previously expressed their wish for her body to be repatriated to their home province of Isabela in northern Philippines before Christmas so they could hold funeral rites locally.
