22nd December 2025 – (Kuala Lumpur) Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Namewee, born Wee Meng Chee, has been cleared of a drug consumption charge after a Kuala Lumpur court accepted official test results showing no narcotics in his system. The artist, who became embroiled in the high‑profile murder investigation of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh Yu‑hsin, had earlier been arrested in Malaysia and released on police bail. While investigators reportedly found no direct evidence linking him to Hsieh’s death, he was separately accused of drug offences after an initial urine screening allegedly returned positive results for four controlled substances and officers allegedly discovered a small blue pill on his person.

At a fresh hearing on Monday (22nd December), the magistrates’ court in Kuala Lumpur heard that a full toxicology analysis had overturned the preliminary findings. Deputy public prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur confirmed that the formal urine report was entirely negative, with no trace of the previously cited drugs. On that basis, defence lawyer Joshua Tay argued that the self‑administration charge under Section 15(1)(a) of Malaysia’s Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 – which had alleged consumption of amphetamine, methamphetamine, THC and ketamine – could no longer stand and should be dismissed.

Magistrate Arunjothy M Selvaraju agreed, ruling that Namewee was not guilty of the drug‑taking allegation and ordering his immediate release in respect of that count, together with the return of his bail money. The decision marks a dramatic reversal from the original narrative, in which preliminary testing had led to widespread public speculation about his alleged drug use.

However, the case against the 42‑year‑old artist is not over. He still faces a separate charge of possessing 5.12 grams of ecstasy, an offence under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act that carries a potential sentence of between two and five years’ imprisonment and three to nine strokes of the cane if convicted. That matter remains before the courts pending an updated report from the government chemist, and is scheduled for further hearing on 19th January next year.

Throughout Monday’s proceedings, Namewee, dressed in black, maintained a low profile. He remained largely silent in the face of media questions and left the court swiftly with his associates after the verdict on the consumption charge was delivered. On social media in recent days, he has described the period as one of the darkest in his life, writing that he had lost all his work and that both family members and colleagues had been subjected to intense public scrutiny and stigma.
