22nd December 2025 – (Sydney) The father and son accused of carrying out Australia’s deadliest terrorist atrocity are alleged to have undertaken firearms training at a secret countryside location in the months leading up to the Bondi Beach shooting, according to an alleged statement of facts released by a magistrate on Monday.
The court document, which has been partially redacted, includes still images taken from a training video said to show 50‑year‑old Sajid Akram and his 24‑year‑old son, Naveed, handling rifles and shotguns in a manner consistent with tactical instruction. “The accused and his father are seen throughout the video firing shotguns and moving in a tactical manner,” the document states, suggesting a degree of premeditated combat-style preparation.
Fifteen people were killed on 14th December in the Bondi Beach attack, which authorities say was directed at a crowd of Jewish families gathered to celebrate Hanukkah. Police shot dead Sajid Akram at the scene. His son, who survived, is now facing a terrorism charge, 15 counts of murder and a further 40 counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident.
The alleged facts set out in the document claim that, moments before opening fire, the pair hurled four improvised explosive devices towards the crowd. None of the devices detonated, but investigators say subsequent examination showed that all four — three pipe bombs and a device concealed within a tennis ball — were capable of functioning. Photographs released by New South Wales Police and referenced in the document depict the recovered IEDs, alongside a fifth suspected explosive device allegedly packed in the boot of the vehicle used to drive to Bondi for the attack.
Prosecutors also allege that Sajid and Naveed recorded a series of videos articulating views consistent with “religiously motivated violent extremism ideology”. In one of the clips, filmed in front of an image of the Islamic State flag, the pair are said to have issued statements “condemning the acts of Zionists” and to have appeared to “summarise their justification for the Bondi terrorist attack”, according to the document.
The statement of alleged facts further contends that the operation was the culmination of a prolonged period of planning rather than a spontaneous act. “There is evidence that the accused and his father… meticulously planned this terrorist attack for many months,” the document asserts, outlining what investigators describe as extensive preparation in both ideology and capability prior to the Bondi shootings.
