22nd December 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Government will convene the oath-taking ceremony for Members of the eighth-term Legislative Council (LegCo) at 11am on 1st January 2026 (Thursday) in the Chamber of the LegCo Complex. The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, will preside over the proceedings and administer the oaths in accordance with statutory requirements.
The administration stressed that the taking of the oath is a solemn and legally binding act. Each Member is required to genuinely uphold and faithfully observe the oath prescribed by law. Any person who swears a false oath, or who subsequently conducts himself or herself in a manner that contravenes the oath after it has been taken, will incur legal liability under the applicable legislation.
Following the completion of the ceremony, the Government will issue the official list of Legislative Council Members whose oaths have been confirmed as valid. Only those whose oaths are deemed to comply with the legal requirements will be recognised as having duly assumed office.
Under the Oaths and Declarations Ordinance (Cap. 11), as revised by the Public Offices (Candidacy and Taking Up Offices) (Miscellaneous Amendments) Ordinance 2021, the LegCo oath must be administered either by the Chief Executive personally or by an individual formally authorised by the Chief Executive to perform this function. The upcoming ceremony will be conducted in line with this statutory framework.
