22nd December 2025 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong Customs has intercepted a suspected drug trafficking attempt involving an inbound air passenger, seizing approximately 5 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine and arresting a 25-year-old man at Hong Kong International Airport on 22nd December. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered three suspected gravity‑operated steel batons and two suspected controlled air pistols. The total estimated market value of the seized items is about HK$4 million.
The passenger arrived from Johannesburg, South Africa. During customs clearance, officers discovered the suspected cocaine concealed in false compartments of his checked suitcase and arrested the man at the scene.
Following the arrest, Customs officers conducted a search of the suspect’s home and recovered the additional weapons.
An investigation is under way. Customs said it will continue to intensify enforcement against drug trafficking through intelligence‑led operations and risk assessment, with a focus on screening passengers arriving from higher‑risk regions. The public is urged not to participate in drug trafficking for financial gain, not to accept assignments to carry controlled items into or out of Hong Kong, and not to transport unknown items for others.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in dangerous drugs carries a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment. Possession of arms without a licence under the Firearms and Ammunition Ordinance is punishable by up to a HK$100,000 fine and 14 years’ imprisonment. Possession of prohibited weapons under the Weapons Ordinance is liable to a maximum fine of HK$10,000 and up to three years’ imprisonment.
