22nd December 2025 – (Copenhagen) Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said on Monday he will summon the U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Kenneth Howery, after U.S. President Donald Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland. The appointment, announced on Sunday, triggered a sharp response in Copenhagen. Rasmussen told broadcaster TV 2 he was “upset, particularly by the envoy’s statements about making Greenland part of the United States. We find that completely unacceptable.”
In an earlier written statement to Danish broadcaster DR, Rasmussen noted the move reflects sustained American interest in the Arctic territory, but stressed that “everyone, including the U.S., must show respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
Tensions escalated after Landry posted on X following his appointment, thanking Trump and calling it an honour to serve “to make Greenland a part of the U.S.”
