19th December 2025 – (Sydney) Police have arrested seven men in south‑west Sydney over an alleged plan to carry out a violent act, saying the group is ideologically connected to the perpetrators of the recent Bondi Beach mass shooting.
Heavily armed tactical operations officers detained the men in Liverpool, about 28 kilometres from central Sydney, on Thursday afternoon after receiving intelligence suggesting a possible attack was being planned. New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson told ABC Radio on Friday that investigators believe the men are influenced by extremist ideology.
The arrests follow Sunday night’s shooting at Bondi Beach, where two men — whom authorities say were motivated by Islamic State ideology — opened fire on a crowd marking the first night of Hanukkah. Sixteen people, including one alleged gunman, were killed.
Hudson said police had indications the seven men, who had travelled from Victoria to New South Wales, intended to go to Bondi Beach. Tactical officers moved pre‑emptively, he added, detaining the suspects before any weapons could be sourced.
“In the wake of last Sunday’s atrocities, our tolerance and threshold for risk are, as you’d expect, very low,” Hudson said.
