19th December 2025 – (Moscow) President Vladimir Putin on Friday condemned European Union moves to appropriate Russian assets, labelling the effort “robbery” and cautioning that it could carry grave consequences for Europe’s financial credibility and the wider global system. Speaking at his annual press conference, Putin said Moscow would defend its interests over overseas holdings chiefly through legal avenues, insisting that any attempt to confiscate Russian property abroad would be fraught with difficulty and subject to court challenges.
He warned that seizing Russian assets within the EU would do more than tarnish reputations, arguing it would erode confidence in the eurozone and weaken Europe’s standing as a secure location for reserves. According to Putin, some countries are already questioning the safety of assets kept in Europe.
Putin further argued that proposals to extend loans to Ukraine using Russian assets as collateral would expand the financial burdens on EU member states, many of which are already contending with budgetary strains.
